Celebration of International Tea Day
Date: 21/05/2020
Objective:
To promote and foster collective actions,
to implement activities in favour of sustainable production and consumption of
tea and raise awareness of its importance in fighting hunger and poverty.
21st May, 2020: Tea
is the most widely consumed drink in the world, after water. With time, it has
become a very important cash crop the world over. There was a dire need to plan
and implement actions to secure wages of workers at tea plantations, their
health and security, sustainable methods of tea production, etc. Thus, the
United Nations, on recommendations of the tea growing countries of the world,
especially India, declared 21st of May as International Tea Day.
Department
of Botany, Y & M AKI’s Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce,
celebrated this day via the digital platform ZOOM, a step taken in the wake of
the COVID-19 pandemic on 21st May, 2020. Students and staff
registered for the event through Google forms. After Tilawat-e Quran, Head,
Department of Botany, Mrs. Meherunisa Shaikh welcomed the guests, followed by
in introduction to the program by Miss. Nabila Shaikh. Principal Dr. Aftab
Anwar Shaikh, addressed the gathering, encouraging students to participate in
digital events from home inspite of the lockdown!
Students
of TY B.Sc (Botany) Master Ruben Pawar shed light on advantages of tea, and its
impact on world economy while Miss Arshiya Pathan brought forth the
disadvantages of consuming tea. These inputs through students spread awareness
on the grim situation of laborers and how this can be improved through boosting
production and consumption of tea, the Magical Beverage! Dr. Rafik Shaikh,
Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, proposed the vote of thanks. The
program was compered by Dr. Aafreen A. Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Department
of Botany.
With
permission and guidance of Principal Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh and Vice-Principal
(Faculty of Science) Prof. Iqbal Shaikh, the event proved to be successful.
Technical support for organizing this digital event was provided by Mr. Imran
Mirza, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science.
FY, SY & TY B.Sc students, staff and alumni of Poona College and faculty from colleges across Pune connected digitally to mark this celebration. In all, 32 participants registered for the event for which they were given e-certificates.
